Oriental and India Office Collections of the British Library

The Oriental and India Office Collections of the British Library holds a variety of visual and documentary material relating to public buildings in British India. Among the holdings of its Prints, Drawings and Photographs Section are paintings by professional and amateur artists, prints dating from the mid-seventeenth century, and architectural photographs from the 1850s onwards. The India Office Records Section holds the records of the India Office Public Works Department, in which the progress of building projects across India can be traced; the records sometimes include architectural drawings and plans. Related financial information can be found in the Section’s Economic Department records. The European Manuscripts collection of private papers includes papers of architects and of Public Works Department employees, as well as descriptions and drawings made by private individuals of the buildings that surrounded them.

There is an overview of the Collections on the British Library website www.bl.uk/collections/orientalandindian.html
