About NAS
The National Archives of Singapore was established in 1968 as the official custodian of public archives and records, which reflect the rich history and development of Singapore. A treasure house of information, it maintains records, some of which date back to 1800, in various formats. These include paper, photographs, audio tapes, films, video tapes, computer disks and magnetic tapes. As a key information provider, much of its records are accessible as research material to organisations and members of the public.
Apart from public records, the National Archives also collects the records of individuals and private organisations, both locally and abroad, to fill in gaps of our holdings. Its Oral History Centre conducts Oral History interviews with Singaporeans and others related to Singapore's History. The Centre also conducts training courses on oral history methodology to local and overseas institutions. To preserve and promote places of historical significance, the Historic Sites Unit was set up to research, co-ordinate and implement the marking of Historic Sites. The Preservation Monuments Board is another unit that identifies and preserves national monuments of historic, traditional, architectural or artistic interest.
NAS Holdings The National Archives continues to promote research by providing researchers facilities and services to use the Archives. It has published catalogues, guides, finding aids, subject indices and on-line databases to inform potential users of the type of materials available for consultation.
